Heat Transfers (HTV)

Heat transfer vinyl (HTV) is a versatile way to apply custom designs, logos, names and numbers to apparel using professional heat and pressure.

At Imprinted Apparel, we use high-quality heat transfer vinyl to create durable, professional-looking decoration for a wide range of garments and applications.

HTV is especially well suited to names, numbers, simple graphics, personalization and specialty finishes, making it a great option for sports uniforms, team apparel, workwear and smaller custom orders.

Explore the options below to learn more about vinyl decoration, recommended uses, limitations, garment care and artwork requirements.

We use several types of premium heat transfer vinyl to create custom apparel, including printable vinyl for full-colour graphics and solid-colour vinyl for names, numbers and simple designs.

Printable vinyl is produced using a large-format vinyl printer and can reproduce detailed, multi-colour logos at a cost-effective price for smaller quantities. Depending on the artwork, a contour may be added around the design to help it blend with the garment colour. Once printed and cured, the excess vinyl is removed and a clear carrier sheet is applied so the design can be transferred to the garment using a commercial heat press.

Solid-colour vinyl is available in a wide range of colours, finishes and textures and is especially well suited to player names, numbers, lettering and simple graphics. Specialty materials, including 3M reflective vinyl, are also available for applications where added visibility is important.

Heat transfer vinyl offers a durable, professional finish and is a strong option for custom apparel requiring personalization, smaller production quantities or specialty finishes.

Vinyl heat transfer is an excellent choice for smaller orders, personalization and designs that require durable, clean application. It can also be applied in areas where traditional screen printing may not be practical, allowing for a wide range of custom options.

Vinyl is especially well suited for personalization on sports uniforms, including player names and numbers, and can be a cost-effective solution for other customized apparel. Vinyl transfers work well on polyester, cotton and blended garments and can also be suitable for technical apparel where embroidery may not be ideal.

Common vinyl applications include:

  • Sports jerseys
  • Player names and numbers
  • T-shirts
  • Polos
  • Jackets
  • Bags
  • Soft-sided coolers
  • Koozies
  • Specialty and technical garments

Vinyl heat transfer is generally best suited to simpler designs, lettering, names, numbers and graphics with clearly defined shapes. Highly detailed or complex multi-colour artwork may be better suited to DTF, DTG, screen printing or embroidery, depending on the garment, quantity and desired finish.

Certain fabrics can also require special consideration. Synthetic and semi-synthetic materials such as polyester, spandex, rayon and nylon can react differently to heat and adhesives. Our team can recommend the most suitable decoration method for your garment and design.

You’ve got your new custom printed apparel & you love it so much you want it to last a long
time. Here’s our recommended garment care instructions to prolong the life of your printed
apparel.

We recommend turning the garment inside out and washing on cold cycle using a mild
detergent and no fabric softener. Heat can cause fading & shrinkage of the garment & will
degrade the print faster. We also recommend:

– Do not dry clean
– Hanging to dry
– Wash with like colors/materials.
– Do not bleach.
– Do not iron the print.

Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV) Printing: Requirements, Materials & Process

What Is Heat Transfer Vinyl Printing?

Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV) printing is a garment decoration method that uses heat and pressure to apply a vinyl design onto fabric. A design is cut from a heat-sensitive vinyl sheet, unwanted material is removed, and the remaining design is permanently bonded to the garment using a heat press.

HTV is widely used for creating custom:

  • T-shirts
  • Hoodies
  • Sports uniforms
  • Workwear
  • Bags
  • Promotional apparel
  • Personalized gifts

HTV Printing Process

1

Create the Design

Prepare the artwork using design software.

  • Check sizing
  • Convert text if needed
  • Create layers for multi-colour designs
  • Mirror the design before cutting
2

Prepare the Vinyl

  • Select the correct HTV material
  • Load vinyl with the carrier sheet facing downward
  • Adjust cutter settings based on material thickness
3

Cut the Design

The cutting machine cuts through the vinyl layer while leaving the carrier sheet intact.

4

Weed the Design

Remove excess vinyl around the artwork. The final design should contain only the pieces that will be transferred onto the garment.

5

Prepare the Garment

Before pressing:

  • Remove wrinkles
  • Pre-press the fabric briefly
  • Remove moisture and fabric tension

Proper preparation helps improve adhesion.

6

Apply Heat and Pressure

Typical HTV application ranges are:

Temperature
150–170°C
300–340°F
Press Time
10–20 seconds
Pressure
Medium
Important: Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific vinyl being used.
7

Remove the Carrier Sheet

Peeling instructions depend on the vinyl type:

Hot Peel
Remove immediately after pressing.
Warm Peel
Remove after a short cooling period.
Cold Peel
Allow the design to cool completely before removing.
8

Final Press

A second press may be used to improve adhesion, durability, and the overall professional finish.

Factors That Affect HTV Quality

Temperature

Incorrect temperature can cause poor adhesion, vinyl melting, or fabric damage.

Pressure

Proper pressure ensures the adhesive bonds correctly. Too little pressure may cause peeling, while excessive pressure can damage materials.

Fabric Preparation

Clean, dry, wrinkle-free fabric produces the best results.

Washing Instructions

  • Wait 24 hours before the first wash
  • Turn garments inside out
  • Use mild detergent
  • Avoid high heat drying
  • Do not iron directly on the vinyl
